Organization & Internship Background:
The San Diego Waves Baseball Team, a certified 501(c)3 non-profit organization, attracts elite college players, coaches, and college students seeking to gain experience in the sports industry to the greater San Diego area for the months of June and July. A proud member of the Western Baseball Association and an affiliate of the California Collegiate League and entering its 31st season of operation, the Waves strive to provide the finest collegiate summer baseball experience in the greater San Diego area. Learn by doing! Sports Marketing interns will be key players in advancing our mission. You will spend the summer gaining valuable experience in the sports industry, building your resume and career portfolio, and learning through mentoring, networking, and training.
Location:
• Home Field: Escondido High School.
• Located off the 15 Freeway 30 miles northeast of San Diego
• Opponent locations: Throughout the state of California. Mostly Southern California.
Sports Journalism & Media Relations Responsibilities:
• Overall responsible for communicating the story of the San Diego Waves collegiate summer baseball experience through writing.
• Write daily game recaps, feature stories, and news pieces on the team.
• On a daily and game by game basis, edit, label, caption, and upload content to the Waves website, internal management platform, social media accounts, plus more.
• Manage all baseball information, including daily statistical packages and game notes.
• Write and distribute press releases, newsletters and other information to media, alumni, and fans.
• Responsible for all updates and new content for the official Waves website and social media platforms.
• Strong knowledge of baseball rules and statistics.
• Working with players, coaches, and various members of the front office, obtain quotes for press releases and feature stories.
• Research and interview players, coaches, and other subjects for feature stories and Waves social media platforms that will be on camera.
Requirements:
• Possess a passion and proficiency for writing.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Be deadline driven. Daily completion of assigned tasks.
• A team player with a “get it done” attitude and work ethic.
• Excellent organizational skills. Self-motivated and detail oriented.
• Pursuing or completed an undergraduate degree in a related major.
• Represent the San Diego Waves exhibiting a high-level of professionalism at all times.
• Cooperation, responsiveness, and dependability.
Time Commitments:
The Waves 2026 college summer season runs June to early August. Games will be played approximately four to six days-six days a week. Being able to start remote work before the season begins is preferred.
Notes:
• The position is eligible as a college credit internship. Applicants not in need of credit may still apply.
• The position is a volunteer based intnernship.
• The hours vary. Game days are typically anywhere from 11:00 am-10:00 p.m. Non-game days are on an as-needed basis.
• All interns will be required to commit for the duration of the season (exceptions for varying school start/stop dates will be reviewed on an individual basis).
• Interns will have the opportunity to build relationships with industry professionals and with members of the professional, collegiate and amateur baseball community.
